About · Niels van Eck

I'm Niels van Eck, and I live in the Netherlands. I build software for two kinds of people: volunteers who run associations and clubs, and scientists who work in a lab.

For associations that means websites that do the actual work of the club: member areas, show entries and results, pedigrees, documents that print correctly. Most of their members use a phone and many are over 60, so I keep things simple, readable and fast.

For the lab it means tools that fit how the work is really done: a lab notebook that calculates formulations as you type, imports data from the instruments, and a desktop tool that measures foam cells from microscope images.

I prefer writing my own code over stacking paid plugins, and I host my own projects on a Debian server with Docker. I care about the unglamorous parts: backups, safe imports that never wipe data, and checking that something works live before calling it done.
